The 1000 Empty Bowl Challenge - Clay Club May 17-18, 2014
This month’s Clay Club will be Saturday and Sunday, May 17 and 18 from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Lisa Blackburn and John Hartom's studio in Yancey County.
134 Lynnewood Lane Burnsville, NC ( off Arbuckle Road - across from the Rodeo)
We will be doing the 1000 EMPTY BOWL CHALLENGE. We will be making at least 1000 bowls for Empty Bowls in 8 hours and then they will be trimmed on the next day in 8 hours. We are not JUST trying to make the 1000 bowls but also help John Hartom switch over from cone 10 reduction to cone 6 reduction in an effort save energy and time.
Anyone who wants to help with this ambitious project to help the hungry in the region should contact John Britt at johnbrittpottery@gmail.com and sign up for a time slot. ( Maybe one or two hour slots?) We have a limited number of wheels but can stagger people if you sign up in advance.
You don’t have to know how to throw to help. We will need people to prepare clay before the event (Wedging one pound balls- Friday, May 16 from 9:00 – 12:00 noon). And we will need people to carry boards of bowls outside to dry and bring them back in. We will also need people to “deform” the bowls with stamps and wooden tools to make various shapes. And finally we will need people to load the kiln on Sunday.
So if you want to help please sign up for this event so I can make up a schedule and also estimate participation so we can provide food for lunch. (We don’t want to have too much food and end up wasting food at an Empty Bowl event!)
This will be DIFFICULT for us to achieve but I believe it can be done if we get some help from the Clay Club. If everyone chips in a little and does what they can -I know we can do it and we can generate some energy for this growing problem in our community – the lack of food. It is a tragedy and we all get compassion fatigue but if we try to do it all in one weekend I think we can make a huge difference.
This should be a really fun and memorable event so let me know if you want to help! 828-467-5020
