Last Glaze Workshops for the year 2012

Anyone interested in learning about glazes...I have two more workshops this year and then I am taking at least a year break to work on a book. So this may be the time for you to catch one of the last two workshops.  This one is a weekend of firing celadons, copper reds and shinos and it is in upstate NY:

Understanding Glazes and Firing

Course DescriptionThis workshop will be a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on but not limited to cone 10 reduction. It is designed for beginner to intermediate potters. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. This will lead us into some basic classifications of glazes, like shino, copper reds, ash, celadon, temmoku, oil spots, etc. We will discuss how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve them. We will also fire a cone 10 reduction firing for celadons, shinos and copper reds.

  This course in basic ceramic chemistry is designed for potters who want to become acquainted with the materials used in ceramics, their origins and uses in mid-range and high-fire glazes. We will briefly cover oxides and their sources, the Seger Unity Molecular formula, and will mix and test glaze recipes on test tiles only.
