I think it is an oakleaf hydrangea. We have a couple of them up here.Now, what is the insect? A katydid?

I'd say its a PG hydrangea; that's short for Hydrangea paniculata grandiflora. The leaf doesn't look correct for an oakleaf hydrangea, from the little we can see in the photo.
