New Show at Crimson Laurel: starts Saturday April 2, 2011 - April 30, 2011

Submerging the Bathysphere

APRIL 2 – APRIL 30
Submerging the Bathysphere is an illustrative ceramics exhibit featuring Eleanor Annand and Jason Bige Burnett.  These two artists have come together to investigate life at sea through illustrative ceramics. In both form and content they have combined their playful sensibility to create decorative and functional ceramic work.
Eleanor Annand is primarily a printmaker and illustrator. She creates prints with strong central characters that tell tales of exploration, escape, and disguise. These stories evoke folklore of the past and urban legends.

Jason Bige Burnett involves screenprinted and digital printmaking methods into his ceramics. Simultaneously he incorporates pop influenced imagery that is both personal and universal creating a sense of deviancy and play to his ceramic work.
This exhibit will open on April 2, 2011 and will be on display at Crimson Laurel Gallery and online through the end of April.

New Ceramics Magazine 1/2011

I have an article in the January issue of New Ceramics: The European Ceramics Magazine. If you haven't seen it, give it a try. Great magazine and it opens you up to an entirely different perspective.

Chinese Meiyintang Collection at Sotheby's

If you like Chinese Pottery here is a nice "catalogue" that Bill Sanders sent to me:

What Do You Do?

Obviously my cleaning job was inadequate. My right burner went out again and won't relight during firing (just had started body reduction ^010 or so). What is the next course of action? I cut the kiln off and closed it up. Can anyone help me clean this burner? I'm stressing since the kiln is full of Nelle's work (and we know how much of a worrier she is). She needs the pots by Thursday. Please help!

FREE - Loads of molds

PLASTER MOLDS for slip-casting.
"ALL kinds" available for FREE.

We have "a few "truckloads full" said the nice man who dropped by THE EnergyXchange Clay Studio yesterday inquiring whether we might like to have them.

He had just come from unloading 1 truck o' molds @ the landfill.
His hope --- to find someone who can use the rest ... instead of "dumping"

If interested, call Patricia Robinson @ 828-675-5564 (home) or 828-284-4093 (cell).

Venting

So, here is the set up for my Skutt.  On my Back patio.  In that corner, open to the yard with a wind operated vent in the roof.  Does the kiln need a vent if it is outside?  Do I need to cover the kiln when it's operating to keep it warm?  (Crazy question).

I STILL WEDGE

HELP

Well, I've gotten myself in trouble again.  Kari very graciously agreed to help me fire Cone 10 in her kiln on the 24th and with all the moving and rain and , well, all of the excuses I can muster, I'll only have 1/2 a kiln. Is there anyone with pots to fill the kiln or a kiln with room for my pots next week.  I am desperate, as this is a big order (big for me) for Passover that has to be shipped by the end of the month.  Any advise?

NC Clay Artists 2011

Would you share with NC Clay Club please! And any other professional NC potters.

The NC Pottery Center has been working to update our NC Clay Artists page by adding links to professional potters websites. This page receives more hits than any other page on our site, 900-1200 views each month.

There are many NC potters whose websites (and other information) are not listed. If you would like to have a link to your website on our page then please go to http://ncpotterycenter.org/ncpotters.html. You can see your information listed from the info we have, and you can submit updated info on the form link on this page or by clicking on this link http://ncpotterycenter.org/pottercontactform.html

And if you haven't been in to see the current exhibit Tea Time, try to get to Seagrove. It is wonderful. We also hope you will consider joining the NC Pottery Center and supporting this wonderful museum and its missions.

If you have question you can email us at membership@ncpotterycenter.org or potterydirectory@ncpotterycenter.org. Thanks!

Glaze Brush

Hate to promote globalization and the loss of US jobs, but...I was just a IKEA and bought this $0.99 toilet brush. It works great for glaze buckets.

IKEA is the final step in consumer economics. You actually go in there and think to yourself... "well it is so cheap I could buy another in a couple years when it falls apart and still save money". It is where globalism, cheap labor, monster boats, shipping containers, plastic, laminates, self-check-out and day care all come together in the total shopping experience... and then the throw in a free sugar filled pre-diabetic lunch.  And then you go home and assemble it!  What more could you ask for?!

God helps us all!

I AM HAVING GLAZE PROBLEMS!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

*its hard to see in this picture, but if you look close enough you can see my problem.

HEY ALL so here it is. i am glazing some small bowls and i am putting a glaze on the outside as well as in the inside, i bought a whole bunch of new stilts for putting the glazed bowls on. my problem, i am putting the layers of glaze on the bowl, and then when i load them into my kiln and get the out, i have three perfect little notches left from the stilt. my question, do i need to put kiln wash on the stilt and if i do how will that effect the firing??? this problem leaves me at a stand still until i can figure this out.

thank you!

Vole....was Mole

I saw this creature yesterday frolicking around on the ground on Round Mountain, NC. I think it is a mole but not sure. It had a short tail and small eyes, but nice digging claws. Something probably ate him/her by now as there was no fear or flight response.
